Propolis is a natural resinous substance generally referred to as ‘Bee Glue’. Bees collect the resin from bark and buds of trees. They process this resin by mixing wax, pollen, salivary secretions and collected natural resins to form Propolis.
The bees utilise this dark sticky substance to fill up any cracks on the inner layer of the hive. This process is to seal and protect the hive from infection, fungal growth and bacteria. To strengthen and protect the hive from intruders, bees’ smear Propolis at the entrance.
Propolis is a complex natural substance that contains phytochemicals, flavonoids, organic acids, vitamins and minerals. The flavonoids in propolis are made up of resin, balsam (50%), wax (30%), essentials oils (10%), pollen (5%) and organic matter 5%. Flavonoids are one of the main groups of phenolic compounds in Propolis. This flavonoid concentration affects the bioactivity of Propolis.
Manuka Honey is the Native New Zealand Māori name for the leptospermum scoparium tree. Australian by Nature sources Manuka Honey from our own apiaries in far north New Zealand. Produced by honeybees and collected from beehives located in high density, organic and pollution free Manuka Forests.
